AI SEO for HVAC companies: ChatGPT can't recommend a website it can't read

Ask ChatGPT who the best HVAC contractor in your city is. If your company is not in that answer, the reason is usually one of two settings on your website, not the size of your competition.

The basics

What is AI SEO for HVAC companies?

What this page is not

To be clear about what this page is not: it has nothing to do with using AI tools to run your business, write your quotes, price a job, or schedule your techs. This is about whether AI tells homeowners to call you.

AI SEO for HVAC companies is the work of getting a heating and cooling contractor named and cited when someone asks an AI assistant for a recommendation. It covers ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Perplexity, and Claude. It is also called generative engine optimization (GEO), answer engine optimization (AEO), and LLM optimization.

It is a different job from ranking on Google, and the difference is brutal. Google returns ten links. An AI assistant returns one answer naming two or three businesses. Position 4 on Google still gets clicks. Position 4 in an AI answer does not exist.

The two checks

Two settings that make an HVAC website invisible to AI

Every guide on this topic tells you to add schema, write conversational content, build city pages, and collect reviews. Fine advice, and it is the fourth thing that matters. Here are the first two, and you can check both yourself in about a minute.

01

Your host may be blocking the AI crawlers outright.

This one costs you everything and almost nobody checks it.

ChatGPT reads the web through a crawler called GPTBot. Claude uses ClaudeBot. Perplexity uses PerplexityBot. If your robots.txt disallows them, or your CDN blocks them at the edge, your website does not exist to those systems. Not ranked poorly. Absent.

It happens by accident constantly. Cloudflare added one-click AI crawler blocking in 2024 and later made blocking the default for new domains, and plenty of hosts and security plugins ship the same setting switched on. Nobody tells the contractor. The site works perfectly for customers and for Google while being unreadable to ChatGPT.

Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt in a browser and look for GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, CCBot, or Google-Extended. If any appears next to Disallow, that is your answer, and it is a ten-minute fix.

What to look for in robots.txt
yourdomain.com/robots.txt Invisible to ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity
User-agent: * Disallow: /wp-admin/ User-agent: GPTBot Disallow: / User-agent: ClaudeBot Disallow: / User-agent: PerplexityBot Disallow: / User-agent: Google-Extended Disallow: /

Four lines, added by a security plugin or a CDN default, and the site stops existing to three assistants. Nothing on the page changed.

02

Your content may not exist until JavaScript runs.

Googlebot renders JavaScript. The AI crawlers largely do not. If your site is built on a framework or page builder that assembles content in the browser, Google sees a full page and GPTBot sees an empty shell.

Check it the way we do: open your site, disable JavaScript in your browser settings, reload. Whatever survives is roughly what ChatGPT gets to read. On a lot of contractor sites built in the last few years, the answer is a logo and a phone number.

Googlebot renders the JavaScript, so it reads the hours, the service list, the licence number and the review count.

Neither of these is exotic. Neither costs much to fix. They are invisible to anyone auditing the way SEO has been audited for twenty years.

How AI picks

How to rank in ChatGPT and AI Overviews

Once the crawlers can read your site, four things decide whether you get named.

One question becomes eight.

Ask Gemini for the best HVAC company in a city and it does not run that query. It breaks it into a spread of related searches: top-rated AC repair there, average furnace replacement cost, emergency HVAC nearby. Then it synthesises an answer from everything it found. Contractors who rank across that whole spread get named. Contractors who rank for one strong keyword usually do not.

Actually searched
01 top-rated AC repair in Dallas
02 average furnace replacement cost Dallas
03 emergency HVAC near Dallas
04 24 hour air conditioning repair Dallas
05 HVAC companies Dallas reviews
06 best heat pump installers Dallas TX
07 licensed HVAC contractor Dallas financing
08 HVAC maintenance plans Dallas price

Illustrative fan-out. Google documents the behaviour for AI Mode; the exact subqueries and their number are not published.

Mentions count, linked or not.

In classic SEO an unlinked mention is worth little. For AI systems it counts. Being named in a local "best HVAC companies" roundup, a Reddit thread, a chamber page, or a news piece all feed the connection between your brand and HVAC work in your city. This part takes longest and holds up best.

Your facts have to agree everywhere.

AI systems weight claims that several independent sources corroborate. If your hours differ between your website and your Google Business Profile, or your service area says one thing on Yelp and another on your contact page, the model has no confident answer and names a competitor whose details line up.

Extractability decides citation.

Being retrieved and being quoted are separate steps, and the gap between them is formatting. Sections that answer one question completely, lead with the answer, and name the business get quoted. Sections that build an argument across four paragraphs and lean on "we" and "our" do not.

What we do

What we fix first, and why that order

01

Baseline measurement

We run your business against 40 prompts across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews in your service area and record who gets named. You get the transcripts. Without this, nobody can claim a result later.

02

Crawler and rendering access

robots.txt, CDN rules, and server-side rendering fixed so the crawlers can read the site at all. This is the one that produces sudden movement, because the barrier was mechanical.

03

Extractable content structure

Service and city pages rewritten so each section answers one question, leads with the answer, and names the business instead of saying "we". Schema for LocalBusiness, Service, and FAQ, in the origin HTML.

04

Fact consistency

Hours, service area, phone, licence numbers, and service list reconciled across the website, the Google Business Profile, and the directories AI systems train on.

05

Mention building

Getting the business named in local roundups, association pages, and community coverage. Slow, and the most durable thing on this list.

06

Re-measurement

The same prompts re-run monthly against the baseline, so you can see it move.

Appear in all three assistants with a clean robots.txt? You do not need this service. Some contractors are already fine, usually the ones with a long-established brand and plenty of local press.

  1. 1. Ask ChatGPT: "Who are the best HVAC contractors in Plano?" Note whether you appear, and who does. Who are the best HVAC contractors in Plano?
  2. 2. Ask the same in Gemini and Perplexity. The answers differ more than people expect, and being in one and missing from the others tells you something specific.
  3. 3. Google your main service keyword. If an AI Overview appears, check whether any cited source is you.
  4. 4. Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt and search for GPTBot. yourdomain.com/robots.txt
  5. 5. Disable JavaScript and reload your homepage.
Honest limits

What we cannot promise

On pricing

AI search work sits inside our $2,500 to $7,500 monthly retainer, not as a separate line item. Splitting it out would be dishonest, because most of what makes a business citable is the same work that makes it rank.

Nobody controls what ChatGPT says. There is no submission form, no ranking dashboard, and no documentation to work from. Anyone selling guaranteed AI placement is selling something they cannot deliver.

What can be done is well understood: make the site readable, structure content so it can be quoted, keep facts consistent, and build the mentions that put you in the right context. Those inputs move the outputs. The timeline is uneven and results vary by market.

Model updates also reset things. A contractor named in ChatGPT in March may be absent in June with nothing changed on either side. That is the nature of this channel right now, and any agency telling you otherwise has not been doing it long.

FAQ

AI search, answered

Can ChatGPT do SEO?

It can draft content and analyse a page, and it is now also a channel that sends customers. For an HVAC contractor the second matters more. Homeowners ask it for recommendations and act on the answer, which makes being in that answer the thing worth working on.

Is AI replacing SEO?

It is changing the target. The underlying work, being technically accessible, having content worth quoting, and being a business other sources vouch for, is what has always mattered. What changed is that fourth place used to get clicks and now gets nothing.

How much does AI SEO for an HVAC company cost?

We include it in the $2,500 to $7,500 monthly retainer. Anyone quoting a separate AI SEO fee is usually charging twice for schema markup.

How long before I show up in ChatGPT?

Crawler and rendering fixes can change things within weeks, because the barrier was mechanical. Mention building takes 4 to 6 months. If a site was blocking GPTBot, the first improvement is often fast and dramatic, which says more about how bad the starting point was than about the work.

What is GEO, and is it different from AEO?

Generative engine optimization and answer engine optimization describe the same work under different names. In practice, agencies use them interchangeably.

Do I still need regular SEO?

Yes, and they overlap heavily. AI systems draw on search results, so ranking well feeds being cited.

Our HVAC SEO work and this run together, which is why they are one retainer.

Does my Google Business Profile affect AI answers?

It does. AI systems draw on listings, reviews, and the facts your profile states. A contractor with an inconsistent profile is harder for a model to describe confidently.

See Google Business Profile optimization.

Where this fits

The rest of the work it depends on

HVAC content writing → Citation is a byproduct of pages that answer the question first. Google Business Profile optimization → Assistants read your profile directly. Accuracy there is not optional. Technical SEO for HVAC → If a crawler cannot render the page, no model can quote it. The HVAC SEO blog → Our working notes on AI Overviews and assistant answers.
